| Cardno, Chen Storm Back For Wins
Zalatoris Gets Elusive First Win
On a day where forecasts of hurricane landfall were prevelant just south of Houston, glorious sunshine and calm conditions greeted players in the final round of the Legends Junior Tour Houston Area Championship. Jonathan Chen and Katy Cardno, both of Sugar Land stormed back to win their respective divisions.
In the Boys 15-18, with the main focus on first round leader Albert Miner and his fellow final pairing competitors, Johnathan Chen slipped under the radar and fired a final round 67 to win the division by two strokes over snakebitten Brian Smith of Corpus Christi. Smith thought he was victorious after shooting a second consecutive 70, but was shocked to find his impressive two day total was toppled by the career low Chen final round. "To be honest, I feel like Greg Norman," a disappointed but gracious Smith said after the round (Smith has twice been overtaken in the final round by competitors career low rounds this Summer). First round leader Albert Miner stumbled to a second round 78 to finish alone in 4th.
Katy Cardno shot her first ever under par competitive round to earn her first LJT Championship. Cardno carded a final round 71 to win by seven strokes over Sandra Lee of Carrollton. Cardno birdied two of her last three holes to get to under par. First round leader Ryanne Haddow shot 83 to finsih 3rd.
In the Boys 14 & Under, Will Zalatoris finally garnered his first LJT victory after a 73 in the final round. Zalatoris has finsihed runner up many times on tour this season. The victory wont bring much rest for Will, as he traveled from the Junior World's in San Diego last week, to Houston this week, and onto Pinehurst for the US Kids next week.
Congrats to all of our winners! |
