Ellis leads inaugural Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic
Austin, Texas - Austin native Alex Ellis fired an opening round 68 at Onion Creek Club (par 70, 6351 yards) to take a two shot lead in the inaugural Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic. Ellis was four-under par after an eagle on No. 1 (par 5, 516 yards), his tenth hole, but bogeys on Nos. 4 and 9 left him at two-under for his round. Three players: Jordan Sarran, Kevin Sooch and Trent Redfern are tied for second at even-par 70. William Martinez of Austin leads the Boys 14 & Under division by one stroke over John Rafael of Corpus Christi. Martinez had three birdies en route to a two-over par 72. Sandra Lee of Carrollton got off to a hot start with birdies on Nos. 1 and 7 to get to two-under par but she found trouble on the back nine to finish at three-over par 73. Her score was good enough for a one shot lead over Christine Lin of Austin. Julia Beck, another Austin native, leads the Girls 14 & Under division by four shots over Midland’s Libby Thomas. Tomorrow’s final round will begin at 7:30 AM with players teeing off both #1 and #10 tees. This is the third consecutive year Onion Creek Club has hosted a Legends Junior Tour event but the first stroke play event to be held there. The Match Play Championship was held at Onion Creek in 2006 and 2007. This year’s event was named after a true Texas ’Legend.’ Jimmy Demaret won 31 PGA Tour events in a career that spanned 22 years. He was a three-time winner of the Masters and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1974, Mr. Demaret co-founded Onion Creek Club along with Jimmie Connolly. He used the natural lay of the land as the basis for his design of the course. | |
