Scott maintains lead at Texas State Junior Championship

Kennedy and Choi take titles

 AUSTIN, Texas - Jade Scott followed up his opening round 68 with a two-under 69 to take a four shot lead into tomorrow’s final round of the Texas State Junior Championship. A total of 144 players began the compeition but the field is down to 53 after today’s cut to the low 50 and ties. The cut fell at 10-over par, 154.

Nick Tremps, 15, of San Antonio matched the low round of the day with a three-under 69. Tremps will be paired with Scott and John Duke Hudson, who shot a second round 70, in the final group.

Jack Lempke finished his round with an ace on the par-3, ninth hole. Lempke holed out from 160 yards with a pitching wedge for his second career hole-in-one. It was the second straight day someone aced the ninth hole.

Cole Kennedy of Texarkana held on for a two-shot victory in the Boys 14 & Under division. Kennedy bogeyed his final two holes and three out of the last four but he was able to hold off runner-up Scott Scheffler.

Scheffler began the day one stroke behind but struggled out of the gate with bogeys on the first two holes. He was able to get back within one after consecutive birdies on 13 and 14 but that was as close as he would get. Kennedy, 14, earned an AJGA Junior All-Star exemption with the victory.

There is a three-way tie for first in the Girls 15-18 division heading into tomorrow’s final round. Christine Lin, Christina Stringham and Katy Cardno all sit at 11-over par 153.

The field in the Girls 15-18 division was cut to the low 27 and ties after today’s second round. The cut fell at 167 with 29 players moving on.

Dallas’ Grace Choi won the Girls 14 & Under division in a playoff over Sydney Williams. Choi shot a final round 77 to finish at 158. Choi also earned an AJGA Junior All-Star exemption with the win.

This is the 81st Texas State Junior Championship and the fourth consecutive held at Barton Creek. The Legends Junior Tour has run the event since its inception in 2005.

The final round will begin at 7:30 AM tomorrow with the Boys 15-18 teeing off No. 1 and 10 on Fazio Foothills and the Girls 15-18 teeing off No. 1 on the Crenshaw Cliffside. Media and spectators are welcome.
