Grueling Day at Hollytree

It was evident there was a lot to play for on Saturday at the Tylerpaper.com Championship at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler. Aside from putting themselves in contention for a Major championship, there is a strong battle going on for coveted spots on the Jackie Burke Cup team on the line, as well as jostling for position atop the Legends Junior Tour Player of the Year standings.

Jade Scott and Trey Sullivan showed during Saturday’s 36 hole outing why they are #1 and #2 on the Player of the Year standings. However, the story of the day was Hudson Hansard (currently 18th on the list) who put together stellar rounds of 71 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon to take a two stroke lead over Scott going into Sunday’s final round. Sullivan sits three spots back. Players on the outside looking in for the Jackie Burke Cup spots such as Mauricio Garcia, Mitchell McLeroy, and Albert Minor all had solid days as well. Hansard looks to earn his first Major championship on Sunday, while Scott is looking to make it two in a row after winning the Texas State Junior Championship in August. The shot of the day belonged to Landry Witt, who made his first ever hole-in-one during the morning round at the par-3 11th hole. Landry used a 7-iron for the ace.

Branson Davis holds a commanding 4-stroke lead after a phenomenal Saturday morning backed up by a solid afternoon round. Davis used a front nine 32 (4 under par) and seven total birdies to shoot an incredible 68 in the morning. Davis kept his wits about him in the afternoon, making four more birdies en route to a 75. A dangerous Jake Gorman sits four back going into Sunday on the heels of a second round 70.

Kelsey Kirkpatrick once again showed her dominance in Legends Junior Tour events, shooting an even par 72 in the morning with just two bogeys, followed by a second round 76 that featured 15 pars. It seems apparent that Kirkpatrick will go on to grab her first Major championship of the year.
